「慣れ親しんだ環境を離れ、場所から場所へと移りたくなる強い衝動。特定の目的地にたどり着くことよりも、旅そのものの喜びを求めることが多い。」

この言葉はドイツ語に由来し、「wander」（ハイキングする、さまよう、歩き回る）と「Lust」（喜び、願望）を組み合わせたものです。

木工旋盤をはじめ多くの工芸では、一般に二つの立場が区別されます。似た作品をシリーズでつくり、注文も受ける「生産型の職人」と、一点ものの作品に向き合う「アーティスト」です。

私はたいてい、この二つの「世界」のあいだにいます。何かをつくり出すことに大きな喜びを感じる一方で、制作の工程を磨き上げる挑戦も好きです。アート作品をつくることは、素材と、その木を育てた環境との対話が生まれるので、このうえなくやりがいがあります。自分のアイデアを木に押しつけるのではなく、一片の木のなかで彫り出されるのを待っている「ひとつのボウル」を見つけようとするのです。

生産では、もうひと工夫を見つけることが挑戦であり、喜びです。ほんの小さな工夫で、ボウル1つあたりのサンディングが3分短くなることがあります。100個のシリーズなら300分、まるまる5時間にもなります。

理想的な状況なら、いつもバランスを保てるのでしょうが、この10年はしばしば苦労してきました。伝統的な工芸で自営を続けるには多くの困難があり、その大半はお金の問題です。生き延びるための状態に入ると、なぜ始めたのか、最初に何が喜びを灯したのかを忘れがちです。「仕事ばかりで遊ばなければ、ジャックはつまらない子になる」ということわざのとおりです…。

うつ病を乗り越えた者として、人生の普通の浮き沈みを超えた心の状態の変化には、とても敏感です。心の健康を支えるために、1日に1、2回、長い散歩をするようになりました。はじめは、ほとんど同じ道を少し変えるだけで歩くのが退屈でした。けれど時間がたつにつれ、天気や季節がもたらす小さな変化に気づくようになりました。

花が咲いて散り、鳥が巣をつくり、ひな鳥が初めて飛び立つのを見ました。4月の雨の日も、8月の晴れた午後も、12月の凍える朝も、それぞれに固有の美しさがあるのだと気づきました。この気づきによって、私は初めて「ワンダーラスト」を本当に理解しました。そしてまもなく、この驚きと探究の感覚は、アートや工芸にも当てはまると分かりました。

それからも苦労はありますが、毎日の散歩、農場を囲む山でのときどきのハイキング、さまざまな土地や文化に触れる旅は、私の心の健康と、アーティスト／職人としての仕事にとって、非常に効果的な手段だとわかりました。

Introduction｜WANDERLUST (by Franz Keilhofer, from the opening of the catalogue)

"A powerful urge to leave familiar surroundings and move from place to place, often just for the joy of travelling rather than reaching a specific destination."

The word originates directly from German, combining "wander" (to hike, wander, or roam) and "Lust" (pleasure or desire).

In woodturning and many other crafts, a distinction is usually made between production craftspeople, who focus on creating series of similar work and taking commissions, and artists, who focus on unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Most of the time, I find myself caught between these two "worlds". I find immense joy in being creative, but I also love the challenge of optimising my process. Creating artistic pieces is incredibly rewarding because it allows for a dialogue with the material and the environment that formed it. It is about trying to find that "one bowl" waiting to be carved out of a piece of wood, rather than forcing your ideas onto it.

In production, the challenge—and the joy—lies in finding that extra edge. Sometimes, changing just a small detail suddenly saves three minutes of sanding per bowl. For a series of 100 bowls, that adds up to 300 minutes, or a full 5 hours!

Under the best of circumstances, I would maintain a balanced approach all the time, but over the last ten years, I've often struggled. Being self-employed in a traditional craft comes with many challenges—most of them financial. Financial survival mode makes it easy to forget why you started and what initially sparked your joy. As the saying goes, 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'...

As someone who has overcome depression, I am highly attuned to shifts in my mental state that go beyond life's normal ups and downs. To support my well-being, I started taking long walks once or twice a day. At first, walking the same route with only minor variations felt quite boring. Over time, however, I noticed the subtle changes brought by the weather and the seasons.

I watched flowers bloom and fade, birds build their nests, and fledglings take their first flights. Whether it was a rainy day in April, a sunny afternoon in August, or a freezing morning in December, I realised that each holds its own unique beauty. This epiphany helped me truly understand "wanderlust" for the first time – and I soon understood that this same sense of wonder and exploration can be applied to arts and crafts as well.

Since then, I still have my struggles, but my daily walks, occasional hikes in the mountains surrounding our farm, and travels to experience different places and cultures have proven to be incredibly effective tools for my mental health and profession as an artist/craftsman.
